Hello. I must say it is a very nice review and thanks you for it. There is only a small problem. TinyMe comes in 200(2008.0) and 150(2008.1) mb iso not 270.

Don’t see how you could have overlooked SliTaz (~28MB download).

It does come with FF3

I originally had 200 MB but had written down 270 elsewhere for some reason. I’ll make the change. Sorry!

You are right. I will check it out!

yo puppy linux

You can use RPMs in puppy with rpm command
rpm -i package.rpm
see http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=38069

Same for deb with undeb command

yo puppy linux, thanks for the input! I stand by my selection of Puppy as the best full-featured lightweight distro overall.

The thing that put me off puppy is that it only supports a root account

http://www.puppylinux.org/manuals/puppy-40/english/security/root

Which is a real show-stopper, especially in a multi-user environment with linux-n00bs present. Don’t think I’d want to run as root anyway (except in a system rescue-type scenario), even if that were not the case. So, no puppy for me.

Shame because otherwise it is very newbie-friendly. A bit like a very nice car that uses a ’start’ button instead of an ignition key…

Mr. Smith, yes, I tried to make that point in the post, but I think my wording was off. I have edited it to reflect this shortcoming.

(Originally in the post, but really more of a side comment…) For those who insist on KDE, PCLinuxOS MiniMe is the easiest way to get a stripped-down version of it on your computer. Based on the popular PCLinuxOS distro, MiniMe loses all the applications, providing only a lean KDE-driven system with easy configuration and package management to tailor your installation exactly the way you want it.
